thieves and suns

i just finished this book. the first i've read by markus zusak, but i am now interested in reading another. i've heard this is one of his serious ones and that his others are funny. and yes, this was a serious book. it took me a minute to get it... but then it grabbed me.

it's written in an interesting view point, one i've never read from, and one i can't imagine to be too common...death.

i can't decide if it's a happy or sad book. the majority of the circumstances and experiences shared are sad and pull at my heart, in a way mostly because i've never had to experience wars and separations or losing a sibling or best friend.

and remembering the time of hitler and his power trip- this books gives the source of his power in a way i hadn't thought of... words. any time concentration camps were mentioned in school i automatically felt ill. the thought of the suffering and torment turns my stomach. in school, not a lot was said of the other people. the other people being the ones not suffering in a camp or causing the suffering.

and this is another reason i liked this book. it brought a new vision to my eyes of what it could have possibly been like. and although so many trials are faced- they are overcome, and there are happy moments and memories made that make this a happy story.

i give this book 2 thumbs up- 9.8 out of 10 stars.
(there's some language that i don't care for....)

i have also recently read "A Thousand Splendid Suns". Once again, a book that tugs on my emotions. I haven't ever given much thought to the life lived in Afghanistan, and after this book i feel a compassion towards the women there i didn't know i had. constantly living a life in fear and uncertainty leaves much to be desired, a life i can not imagine.

this book has quite a few sections that were very hard to read, honestly, quite graphic. i'm quite a softy so i can't take a whole lot of that stuff. and the language isn't very clean either... but even with that, i would suggest this book to anyone, especially women. this was a thought provoking story that inspired me to live a better life. 8 out of 10 stars

i enjoyed both of these books because they helped me open my eyes to the world around me. sometimes i fall into my little bubble and sit all too comfortably... actually, i would say most of the time. i don't watch the news- it makes me too sad. i know there are awful things going on all around me, but when i think about it all it does is make me want to cry. and then i think what difference can i make, i'm only one person? well, that's something i need to stop thinking. i might not be able to cure cancer or stop bombs and find homes for the hungry and needy.... but i can be grateful for what i have. i am so blessed. sure, i have my little challenges life hands, but we all do. and if we all sat back and thought i'm only one person then we wouldn't get anywhere. that's why we have to work together, share our struggles and lift each other up with the strengths we can lean on. share our gratitude and rely on the joy in each day. one person can make a difference... helen keller, rosa parks, the old man who smiled at me at publix. one by one is how we'll change this world, one by one we unite and build each other up, make each other a little better every day. one by one we can make a difference.

would you like a spot of tea?

last week tiff wanted to take me to lunch for my birthday on tuesday. she called to reschedule tuesday morning for wednesday... okay, sure no problem. whenever it is, lunch with the sister is always a good time.

wednesday afternoon we meet up and drive, and drive... i had no idea where we were going. she asked if i had anywhere i wanted to go, and i didn't. so i wondered if she was taking me to carolina for lunch or something. but, we ended up walking into a cute "tea room". i walked in and started looking at the cute decorations they had and trinkets they were selling. after a minute i noticed some friends sitting at another table. my first thought, what a coincidence that they would be here too. then i realized... duh amy, they're here for you too!

so it was a surprise tea party! i had no idea, especially with the tricky reschedule thrown in the loop. it was so much fun. the food was yummy, the room was cute and the company was fabulous. we laughed and chatted, and ate and sipped on our tea with our pinkies up!

thanks tiffi for such a fun birthday surprise, i loved it.
and thanks to all the friends who joined in- it was a great way to celebrate!

arf arf, bow wow wow

arf arf arf

ruff ruff ruff arf

translation: happy 3rd birthday ziggie! thanks for being my buddy!
yesterday i took ziggie to celebrate with his uncle chiso, and the packer family. we had a doggone good time. (haha, so i pretend to be funny every once in a while... humor me a little)
(above is zig on the way to his party.... he could barely contain his excitement.)

we made puppy cupcakes- cupcakes for humans, that looked like puppies.
we mixed and stirred...
licked and got messy...
frosted and decorated...
and yes, we do it all in style and on the counter...
the finished product:
and then we ate cupcakes.... this was reef's favorite part.
we wore birthday hats and sang silly songs.
ziggie brought the kids birthday party favors and he got a new toy.
we had a great time and the birthday boy was happy.

another birthday success!

remembered.

our nation, our people, our history
dramatically changed

how is it possible that it's been 8 years?

i can still remember that day.

wondering what would happen next.
afraid to fly,
afraid for public gatherings.

i was stuck to the tv
not sure where my place was in all of it
i wanted to help, but how?

i prayed.
a lot.

i was grateful,
for my family.
for my freedoms.
for my safety.

i loved seeing the flag proudly waving,
men, women, and children
pulling together to unite our broken safety.

now, today, 8 years after
where do we stand?
i feel like the pride and connectedness have faded
the flags don't fly as high,
or as bold.

where is my place in all of this now?

turning 24

can i tell you again how much i love birthdays? i LOVE them sooo much! and thanks to you for all of your sweet comments and for thinking of me on my special day! yesterday was another fabulous birthday to add to the list.

i woke up to delicious homemade waffles with whip cream and sliced, juicy strawberries set next to a beautiful bouquet of flowers. i love flowers too... especially gerber daisies, so cute. my hubby is so good to me!

after breakfast i was lead by clues around the house on a treasure hunt for some fun presents. see... isn't my hubby the greatest? so creative, making the present opening even more exciting!

a little later in the day we had some surprise visitors... the hijackers. we ate some yummy shrimp tacos and chips and salsa, laughed a lot, and laughed some more. the girls love photo booth so we had some fun with that as you can see.
the girls also love to play with uncle jeffy. reef does too, reef loves uncle jeffy. it's so cute to watch him stare at jeff with his big blue eyes wide open and so intently... like he would be saying "uncle jeffy, you're the coolest. i want to skateboard like you and write cool songs on the guitar. will you teach me?" usually jeff and the girls laugh and play and i stand back and turn my head the other way in between laughs... i'm always nervous some one is going to get hurt, and if anybody does, it usually ends up being me. how does that work? yesterday this was their new adventure... (sorry about the crazy film girl, it was her birthday, she had too much party on the brain and didn't really realize when she changes the camera's direction it doesn't automatically flip on the screen while you're viewing it too.. duh.)

after some fun playing time with the packer people they left and jeff drove me to get a manicure. i love when my nails are done... it gives me that extra sense of togetherness. ya know what i mean? i can leave the house looking frumpy but still feel great because my nails are cherry red.... maybe it's just the red- makes me feel powerful. ha

after the mani we ventured to the theater to see a movie. i love movies... another day full of things i love. fancy that, doing what i love on my birthday? did i mention that jeff is so good to me? he is, so good.

after the movie our tummies were rumblin' for some good ole' kobe. once again, something i love. this is one of my favorite restaurants, and it's not easy for me to choose favorites. if you've never been, you need to try it out. they give you so much food it's nearly impossible to leave without feeling like you might pop, but it's worth it... plus, if you don't eat it all you can have lunch for the next day. yum.

our chef was funny, and really nice. there was another girl at the table who turned 20 on the 4th so when he made the rice he made a 2&0 for 20 and added the 4 for 24... clever little man i tell ya.

oh, and on your birthday they bring out a big giant japanese drum and bang it really loud and sing happy birthday. if the drum didn't get everyone's attention the giant hat they place on your head will....

what a fabulous day it was. i was sad to wake up and not have it be my birthday... but then i got to see my beautiful flowers and cards and gifts and remembered this birthday isn't over, it'll be goin and goin for a long while.

wouldn't it be nice if every week could start with a birthday.

HaPpY BiRtHdAy to AMY- Hijacked by some Packer People

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE BEST AMY IN THE WORLD!!
By: Packer People

From Mekena: "We love Amy because she loves us! Because she invites us to dinner at her house. Because she lets us have sleepovers at her house. Because she listens to my knock knock jokes (and there's a lot of them). Knock, knock! Who's there? Potato head. Potato head who? Potato head in the forest! Mom, don't worry Auntie Amy will laugh, she'll crack up. Knock, knock! Who's there? Ketchup. Ketchup who? Ketchup on eating your dinner."

From Kirra: "I love to color at church with Auntie Amy. I love to have a sleepover at her house. She lets me go in her car. And she reads books to me. Knock, knock. Who's there? Bear. Bear who? Bear banana."

From Reef: huuuh, mmmm, dddd.

From Rand: [Rand would have loved to participate in this love letter but had to run out the door to cover for a "sick" employee - on labor day, hmmm sounds suspicious - job opening!]

Me, the typer, Tiffani, her eldest sister LOVES Amy too. Thank you for coming into my world 24 years ago. After I got over the fact that you weren't a boy, you were my bestest friend ever! Finally someone to play school and grocery store with everyday. We have had so much fun together, from one stage to another. I will treasure our memories forever! (Although still feelin' bad about the time I intentionally pushed you off the bed when you were only 3 or so, really, I'm sorry.)

Amy is truly incredible and I am only 1 of 24,675,348,897 people that love her and here are 24 reasons my little sister, that you are most specialist:

1. You are gentle!

2. You give amazing hugs!

3. You bring a calm to my life that no one else can.

4. You love my kids like I do.

5. You can clean like me - which is great for all those times I'm in a bind, which you are always helping me out of!

6. You give me hand me up's (for those reading this - it's like hand me down's, but since she's taller, my stuff will never fit her, so I get all her cute hand me down's but there ups, cause I'm older - get it?)

7. You listen to me over explain so many things (like above hand me up example) and just keep on listening.

8. You'll eat anything I cook and love it and say yummy 10 times and make funny sounds while tasting the flavors.

9. You inspire me to be more spiritual.

10. You teach my kids primary songs.

11. You don't care if I am always right and you let me tell you what to do - maybe because you fear I'll push you off the bed if you don't.

12. You bring me cookies and other delicious treats.

13. Your fun to spend money on, you love everything! Can't wait for the next pay day - the big one!

14. You make me dress up in hoodlum clothes on Halloween when I'm pregnant and don't want to participate - perfect example of how you make the best out of other people's poopy moods.

15. One of your favorite activities is ORGANIZING! Mine too!

16. You tolerate crazy Packer People moments and come back for more.

17. You came and lived with me - not once, but twice, well actually three times. The third time you were married and figured Jeff wouldn't want to live in the same house together so you moved down the street.

18. You sing beautifully. And my kids love that too!

19. You are crafty and make adorable projects.

20. You are "present" - you show up for everything family and help with whatever you can.

21. You are thankful for anything anyone does for you.

22. A buddy for a manicure, pedicure is only a phone call away. P.S. - I'm due!

23. You take great pictures. Thanks to you I will actually have pictures of all three of my kids, not just the first born. And thanks for sending pictures of my kids to the extended family so I can stay out of hot water.

24. YOU are true and genuine and one of my favorite people to talk with, play with and share my whole world with.

So today sister of mine, and auntie to some kids that are cRaZy in love with you... CELEBRATE YOU! You make our days happier, our skies brighter, our hearts warmer, our spirits stronger, our minds deeper and our lives BETTER!! Thanks for being YOU!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMY!! Hope your day {week} is as special as you are! Heck, make it a whole SPECIAL year, all about YOU! LET'S PARTY!

birthday's past

I love birthdays, like I mentioned here. They are so fun and magical. With only one day left until I'm a year older (and wiser too...) I thought I'd take a look at all of the years leading up to tomorrow. It was so fun for me to see these crazy pictures and to take myself back to tasting the frosting, and smelling chlorine or blown out candles. (and it was funny to see how much my handwriting and scrap booking style have changed through the years as well.)

So, come with me... on another journey if you'd like. Everyone likes a party right?! Well, here's a few years full of parties to enjoy...

Here it is, the start of my favorite holiday!

Happy 1st Birthday self! I know that's me... but isn't she "cute as a button"?! (notice the background scrapbook paper?) And I love that pink frilly dress.

Here we are, at my 3rd birthday party. I loved Sesame Street (notice the Sesame Street party hats and playhouse in the back left corner? Oh yeah.) That little blue/tan table we're gathered around still resides in my parent's basement. (Mom and Dad- please take note I'd like to inherit that...)We licked up my favorite ice cream that day, mint chocolate chip. yummy.

Now, I'm not 100% sure on this, but I'm pretty sure this is my 4th birthday. And I'm still lovin' the birthday crowns. (check out below... my 23rd birthday)

And of course, now we visit the ever favorite Chuck E Cheese. Oh man, I loved that place! (and their pizza!) And then it's back to the house for one of my favorite gifts ever... the Jeep. So many memories were made cruisin' around in that 4 wheeled little beauty. (not only did I enjoy seeing my handwriting and scrap booking styles change, but it's fun to see the style of the house decorations change. Gotta love the 80's.)

My 6th Birthday- the year for Little Mermaid. (I was obsessed. and I did a pretty good Ariel if I do say so myself.) There's me with yet another birthday crown, and my sweet dog Dandy. I miss you Dandy. A lot of birthdays involved swimming, because unlike Ariel I wanted to be part of the water world. I'm on the left, you wont miss me... my swim suit is the one screaming at you in green.

We fast forward to my 8th Birthday and Beauty and the Beast. I really loved those princesses. This was the birthday of the bike. Isn't that one of the birthdays every kid dreams of? Or at least one of the presents... seeing it with a big ole' ribbon coming out from it's secret hiding place. Or, walking down the stairs and seeing Santa left one for you under your tree. Well if it's not part of every kids dreams then I'm not sure what would be... I loved that bike! And there's also one example of the amazing cakes my momma always made, she's so talented. My family always made birthdays so special.

Sadly, I think this is the last of the princess parties. This year I turned 9 and dressed like Snow White for the day and all my friends came as dwarfs. I think I remember going on a scavenger hunt this year, but I'm not sure. I know we swam, that's a given. And of course we ate another deliciously cute cake mom made.

Happy 9th birthday- yay! This is the year we went to the circus. Have I ever mentioned how much I love the circus? Well, I do- I love it lots and lots. We started the party at my older sister's dorm room with a Baskin Robbins ice cream cake. I'm pretty sure this is the year I was given my treasured Samantha. (All American Girl Doll) She was my baby.' I would sit and brush her hair, make sure she was dressed in just the right outfit... I cherished her. Then, at the circus I got to choose a friend to go down and be in a little parade in the spotlight. I remember being so nervous to choose a friend because there were 2 with me, so I'd automatically leave one out. To tell you the truth, I don't remember who I chose now... but, it was fun and the 3 of us girls and my family had a blast!

For my 10th birthday I was given a new bedroom set! I remember being so excited. And it was a big year because it was my first double digit year- my parents made that really special. That bedroom set had a good life. It was awesome too, it was a bunk bed but the bottom was a futon... so it was like I had my own couch to hang out on in my room. And a dresser and a desk to match too. I loved it! The dresser and desk both moved in with Jeff and I until we moved across the country... we sold them on good ole' Craigslist. The bed was passed on to a family- I remember the little girl was about the same age I was when I first got it. I hope she loved it as much as I did!

My 11th birthday was a flower theme. Every girl was given a name tag with the name of a flower on it and some small silk flowers inside. We had to call each other by our new flower names. Each time we said their real name, we had to take one of our little silk flowers out of our name tag and give it to the other girl. I don't think I was very good at that game. My mom always went all out... as you can tell by now I'm sure. That's a cake I'm sniffin... yes, a real cake with a garden of silks on top. As each girl left they were given a bag with a jar of candy, some flower stickers, a flower pen in a mini pot and another pot that we decorated. It's funny how much I still remember those gift bags... mom, do you still have that pot?
(and yeah, I know you're jealous of my bags... you should be.)

Here we are for my 12th birthday party! Let's go bowling!
And yes, that is a cake my mother made. A bowling pin- she's crazy and so creative... I love it!
(Mom, I probably didn't appreciate all of this as much as I should have during the moment and I'm sorry for that. Looking back on all of it now and knowing the work you must've gone through- wow. Thank you! And thanks to you too daddy for providing the mula!)
(can you find me? I'm the one in the orange with a silly white thing on the top of my head.... what is that?)

I'm not so sure about the next few years... 13, 14, 15. I know I had a swim party one year- but it wasn't at our house, it was up the street at the Rasmussen's. We didn't have our pool built yet. And I know there was a surprise party in the mix somewhere. (maybe that was part of the swim thing... I don't know.) But, I do know I loved them. and I'm grateful for my family for always making me feel so special.
(oh yum, i love ice cream cake!! Yeah, and I know those braces are super cool.... uh, right.)

My sweet 16! That was fun. I loved all of those balloons and the banner... and there was candy all over the floor. The "kid's play" mix with tootsie rolls, I LOVE that mix- I don't really know why I like it so much but I do, I do. We also had a sleepover this night and did a midnight frosty run to Wendy's. I'm not sure how I remember that- but then I can't really recall my 13th, 14th and 15th birthdays... but maybe it's because food's involved, who knows.
My 17th, 18th and 19th sort of fall into that category with the 13th, 14th and 15th. I remember one of those birthdays (maybe my 18th?) I was living in Florida and my family sent me a birthday in a box. It was awesome, I loved it! I opened up the box and a balloon almost punched me in the face! The box was full of party hats and noise makers, candy and confetti... and presents too. That was a lot of fun. I remember feeling like it was going to be such a different birthday not being "home"- this was my first away from home... and it was great thanks to a birthday in a box and the Packer people.

I was turnin' 20! This year Jeffy celebrated with us. Bryan (jeff's brother) was there too. We swam- see, I told ya I liked to swim on my birthdays. And we had a barbecue with the family. Mom made a delicious brownie/cheesecake... oh man, my mouth waters just thinking about it. Wish I could eat that tomorrow!

The big ole' 21 came with a surprise trip to Disney World- the happiest place on earth! And a giant card made by my sweet class I loved so much (yes, I'm wearing a birthday crown and sitting at a mini table...and yeah, I know I look like a goof). And a delicious (and I mean really delicious) chocolate cake made by Chef Rand.

Jeffy surprised me with a trip to the beautiful Savannah Georgia for my 22nd. The picture on the left is technically on my birthday because it was so late, or so early- however you wanna look at it. We had a yummy snack of Teddy Grahams and milk- oh we love that. And the next morning we were off! If you haven't been to Savannah, I highly recommend it. It is filled with shopping and photos waiting to be taken... and candy stores, you know how I loved that!

and now... my 23rd. It was the day I was a pampered princess. A massage, a manicure and a trip to one of my favorite restaurants. It was wonderful! And- once again, I'm proudly sportin' the birthday crown. (this is one of my favorites though, handmade by the one and only Jeff) We also got to spend time with the Packer family eating yummy food and homemade ice cream. Look how much those kids have grown!

and soon there will be another year of pictures to post... but until then, I need to get some rest. That was a lot of fun, but so many parties has me plum tuckered out...

what's your favorite way to spend your birthday?
